Security and Insecurity
Well I haven't been writing lately (something wierd I noticed anyways) so I thought this up based on a few lectures in my European history class. Basically we talked about the Cold War from the Soviet Union looking to the west. It was a rather interesting take since I focus on U.S. and Asia. But an interesting thought came up when we were looking into the good old U.S.S.R. I know its basic U.S. and world history to know that the Soviet Union was on a roll with spreading Communism and taking over territories in Europe. However we talked about the insecurities that the Soviet Union faced during the 60s. In a time like after WWII they suffered the most when it came to the war in Europe so they had to rebuild and reestablish their place in the world. So when we think of things like the Iron Curtain or the Cuban Missle Crisis most of the time Americans think its just the way those evil commies were back then. But consider this: do you think that it was a aggressive move based on world domination or insecurity? When NATO was established it was clear that it was aimed at the Soviets and in turn they established the Warsaw Pact.
Well thats your history lesson for the day, but I think that insecurities is what rings most in our society today. People are always putting up strong fronts so that they don't look weak, people wear the most fashionable clothes so they seem hip or people will spend lots of money to tone thier bodies into something appealing so they don't seem fat or out of shape. We do these things because we are insecure about ourselves in the world. The world is a big scary place, and as I always say its shallow. Theres always something that will make us rush to do something so we can make ourselves look better. For instance I suppose people don't seem to think I dress very "fashionable", I never really thought that I did to begin with since I never really thought about it since my roomate told me. Another person I spoke to admired me for the way I dressed, he told me that it suited my personality. I suppose you can say that I'm pretty secure with myself in terms of my lifestyle and habits. Are we going to let people's judgements shape the way we feel about ourselves or are we going to feel self concious about ourselves everyday we step outside the door?
Like the Bible says "Judge not lest ye be judged". People need to gain a sense of security with themselves, I can't stand that there are people out there who are making people feel insecure about themselves. As the cliche goes "you are you, let nobody say otherwise". In a really liberal country like the U.S. it seems more like we have a public thought police ready to shoot people down to make them fit more within society's terms of normal. By doing that we make people get eating disorders, psychological disorders, shut ins and so on. Its crazy, but the one thing that seems to shoot down those that say otherwise is to be secure and happy with yourself. I dress shabby so what, I don't run around naked since I'll get arrested plus I dress comfortably. Some girls think anime is wierd well I think Heroes is a rip off of X-men (their powers are much better than the ones in Heroes flying is not a major superpower people). But the point is that if we can feel secure about ourselves we can live a life that is beyond the norms of society. A life where you can be yourself and just be happy. Just think if we had simply addressed or helped the Soviet Union with its insecurities about foreign invasion or economic help maybe something like the Cold War could have been dealt with sooner.
