An Angry Asian Man's Rant on: the Long Beach shuttle system
It has come to my attention that when children become the age of 21 they think of nothing more than what kind of drink they would like to have and when they come to age 16 they think about what car to buy. Being past the age of 16 and turning 21 this past year I have still yet to get a car and do research into one and I really do not enjoy drinking. But that is beside the point, the thing I want to rant about is since I don't have a car I have to think of a different way to get to class everyday. This comes in the form of Cal State Long Beach's "Campus Connection" shuttle system. Now the system is free, granted you are at least a student. However that is where the system fails, it has come to my attention that while one of the prerequisites are being a student that is only one of the many hoops you jump through if you live off campus. Now if you live off campus you are required to get a sticker that proves you live off campus so that you can ride on the shuttle at any of the off campus stops. Apparently Long Beach is plagued with crazys up the yin yang and the only way to keep the riff raff off the shuttles is for students to get said sticker.
Now when you do get the sticker you think that it would be some creative and clever sticker designed by our fine students in the graphic design program, but no what you get is a big ugly rectangle with a bunch of random numbers that takes up a good 3/5ths of your id card and seems like it should go on your license plate. You may be asking why I'm so upset with this part of the system, well here's why. Last year drivers didn't really care if you got the sticker or not, I for one never got it and all was right with the world. But now said sticker is required and every time I get on the shuttle the person gives the driver his/her sob story about how "oh I lost my id card" or they frantically look through their purse/man purse (ha! gay joke, I'm a terrible person sometimes. My readers have all the right to shoot me with a tranquilizer filled with cynide) until the driver gets fed up and lets the person on anyways. You make a system and students will do everything in thier power to get around it.
Next off the people on campus. Now the off campus shuttle also picks up students on campus as well. One of type(s) of shuttles goes along the dorms and parking lots on campus. Now what seems strange to me are the people in the dorms, they actually have the time to wait for the shuttle and those who get on are already late anyways so there is really no point to wait. Plus the whole purpose of living on campus is because One: you live really, really far from Long Beach, Two: you don't have a car and you can afford to live on campus for the experience, Three: You're from another country. Now the perk of living on campus is the fact is obvious, YOU'RE ON CAMPUS ALREADY MEANING YOU CAN LITERALLY WALK TO CLASS IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES MAX IF YOU WALK AT A STEADY PACE! Not only that but when the shuttle is about to leave campus it swings by the parking lot and dorms before leaving. Now you see the problem here, hundreds of students want to go back to thier off campus homes while those who drove or live in the dorms who are too lazy to walk take the shuttle as the shuttle is going back off campus. I am in direct competition with these people and I cannot stress how many shuttles I've missed because it fills up with these people. It confuses even the most brilliant mind (such as mine) as to why people would do this. But enough ranting now, I fear that the school will read this and deem me utterly insane and ship me off to an island where people know too much.
Join me next time when I post something rather interesting, trust me it is going to be weird when you read it but when you do read it step back and consider the topic for yourself as well.
